My weekend was mostly spent sitting home with my mom. I live a wild life, I know. But, when my mom began to make plans with me for today (Monday) and I had to tell her I had school. She was absolutely appalled. My mom was in the Army National Guard for four years. It was her dream when she was younger, and, once we were older, we really needed the extra money, s0 she joined. Although she wasn’t ever shipped off to any foreign countries, she supports her troops even more seeing what they go through.
My dad also served in the Navy for eight years, many of my grandparents and uncles served in many different wars, and my two cousins are serving. One in the Army, who is in Kuwait right now, and another in the Navy who is somewhere in the middle of the ocean right now.
Veterans Day is a day to honor and salute our troops that have served and those who are serving right now. So, I would really like to know why we get days like Columbus Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents Day off, but not a day to honor our troops that have risked everything to protect our freedoms. This isn’t about getting a day off of school, this is about the way our days off have been prioritized.
I’m assuming that my mother isn’t the only Veteran upset that she can’t spend a day honoring her with her children. I’m sure she’s not the only one wondering why minor “holidays” permit a day off, but Veterans day does not.
We get a day off for the most random holidays, so why those instead of a day supporting our troops?
I understand it has already passed and there is nothing more we can do this year, but I hope that next year and the years to come the school understands that Veterans Day is a very important date and we should have the day off. It should be honored just like every other holiday we get off. Once again, I’m not saying this just because I want an extra day to sleep in. I want this because I think this day should be honored just like every other holiday we get off that people don’t even pay attention to. This holiday should be payed attention to, our troops should be payed attention to.
