The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 on Feb. 9, 2025. The game took place at Ceasar’s Superdome in New Orleans. The Chiefs won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half.
Both teams on their first possessions were not able to do anything and had to punt. However, on the Eagles second drive, a 28-yard pass from quarterback Jalen Hurts to wide receiver Juhan Dotson set them up to use the infamous Brotherly Shove for the first score of the game. The Eagles dominated throughout the entire first half. They scored again with a field goal by kicker Jake Elliot, a 38-yard pick-six by rookie cornerback Cooper Dejean and a 12-yard touchdown reception by wide receiver AJ Brown. This was Dejean’s first interception of his career and it also happened on his 22nd birthday. The touchdown by Brown was set up by an interception by middle linebacker Zack Baun. The score heading into halftime was 24-0. Throughout the entire first half, the Chiefs only got 23 total yards of offense. This is the second-lowest total yards in the first half in Super Bowl history.
The second half started in a very similar fashion to the first half. The Eagles ran the score up to 34-0 near the end of the third quarter with a field goal and a 46-yard touchdown throw from Hurt to wide receiver Devonta Smith. The Chiefs finally got on the board at the end of the third quarter with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Patrick Mahomes to rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy. The two-point attempt failed leaving the score at 34-6 to end the third quarter. The Eagles score two more field goals to make the game 40-6 with eight minutes left, making a Chiefs comeback virtually impossible. The Chiefs score two more touchdowns with a 7-yard touchdown to wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and a 50-yard touchdown to Worthy. On both scores, they completed the two-point attempts and made the score 40-22 to end the game.
Hurts won Super Bowl MVP with his stellar performance of 221 passing yards, 72 rushing yards, two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. Smith led the team in receiving yards with 69 followed by Brown with 43. The only positive of the game for the Chiefs was that they limited the offensive player of the year, Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, to 57 yards and zero touchdowns. The Eagle’s defense dominated throughout the entire game with two interceptions and a forced fumble on Mahomes. The defensive line was on another level. With only a four-man rush and zero blitzes, they got six sacks on the night and six tackles for loss. The Eagles linebacker Josh Sweat led the team in sacks with two and a half. Defensive tackle Milton Williams also had two sacks of his own. For the Chiefs, Mahomes had three touchdowns, two interceptions and 257 passing yards. Worthy led the team with 157 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
At half time rapper Kendrick Lamar peformered. He also had singer SZA perform with him on songs All the Star and Luther. The performance was controversial as older generations were not familiar with the music compared to younger generations who appreciated the music.
With this game, the Eagles bring the championship back to Philadelphia for just the second time. This was head coach Nick Sirianni’s first Super Bowl victory. Chief’s head coach Andy Reid now falls to three and three in Super Bowls. The Chiefs were looking to become the first team to three-peat in NFL history, but ended up falling short. This game concludes the 2024 NFL season.
