EDITORIAL: Dogs Are Not Fashion Accessories
September 16, 2014
Dogs should not be carried around in purses, dressed in “cute” outfits or be treated as items.
Dogs are living, loving, beautiful creatures who should not be used as objects for attention, or anything other than wonderful pets and family members.
Recently, celebrity Paris Hilton has posted two contradicting photos on her Instagram account. One of which, her asking her followers to adopt dogs on death row from an animal shelter, with the hashtag “#DontShopAdopt.” Another, of how excited she is about the puppy she just ordered online. Hilton’s most recent “designer dog” is just one of many she has owned.
There are many people, especially celebrities, who use animals for attention from the media, which is completely wrong. The exception to this are animals that were rescued from shelters. Not only are people buying designer dogs from puppy mills, but there has been an increase in private breeders. These private breeders are mutating multiple dog breeds in order to get the desired sizes and colors for their customers. There are thousands of dogs and other animals in shelters deserving of loving, caring homes. This is a problem that needs to be fixed. People should give homes to animals in need before excessively breeding dogs for money.
