Dean Hosts Lunch Meeting to Discuss Changes

Review of dress code policies prompts question-and-answer session to address student concerns.

Dean Hosts Lunch Meeting to Discuss Changes

Following complaints about the dress code and new dance rules emailed to students Monday, Dean of Students Wilbur Borrero held a presentation addressing the problems on Thursday. The slideshow covered the old rules and gave rationale for the new changes, reminding students “this is not us versus you.” The slideshow featured rules from the ACHS Student Handbook, including an expectation of appropriate dancing at formals.

“If you go into your handbook, this is exactly what you’ll see,” Borrero said. “This is what you signed off to conform to.”

After the presentation, Borrero opened up the floor to questions. Following that session, students complained he didn’t directly address those issues

“He didn’t really answer a lot of questions,” freshman Jillian Moffat said. “The point is to ask questions and get them answered.”

When asked about cheerleader and dancer uniforms, Borrero said that was out of school regulation. He repeated the emphasis on school attire.

“First perception is a lot,” he said. “When people walk in, what are they walking away and talking about? That’s what we keep in mind when we talk about dress code.”

Borrero said administration continues to discuss school policies. Concerns from the lunch sessions will be taken account at a leadership meeting tomorrow.

Though Borrero said the dress code and dancing policy wasn’t intended to target one group, other students remain unconvinced.

“He made excuses,” freshman Amber Podgorski said. “I think it’s ridiculous to put boys’ distraction before girls’ education.”
