The Antioch Community High School girls soccer program is back in action preparing for their upcoming season this spring. The girls have been holding open gyms from 6:00-7:00 am before school every Tuesday and Thursday to start getting in shape for the season. Despite it being early, the girls are always willing to put in the work that is needed. Head Coach, Maddie Lyon, really enjoys morning practice as she believes waking up early and getting a good workout in sets a positive mood for your day.
“I think anytime you can get the girls touching a soccer ball, working on their touches, getting to see eachother play will only better them for the season,” Lyon said.
Along with open gyms, some of the lady Sequoits play in the high school league together at Canlan Sports Complex in Libertyville. ACHS plays against other high schools that they will possibly play against during the spring season. They play against Lake Forest High School, Carmel Catholic High School, Round Lake High School and Waukegan High School. The indoor league is very beneficial for the program as it is a mix of JV and varsity players.
“The JV girls want to push themselves, and I think it helps during tryouts just being able to know how each other plays,” Lyon said.
The girls program has been getting stronger in the last three years since Coach Lyon has taken over. The standards and expectations have not only held the varsity team to a higher level, but the program as a whole. Freshman Alaina Tan is putting herself out there by playing in the indoor league so she can get a feel for the upcoming high school season.
“Playing on Sunday’s with everyone is super fun and is definitely going to help me succeed going into tryouts,” Tan said.
The girls program has seen success playing indoors this season with a 5-1 record. The Sequoits always come out ready to play on Sundays so they can work towards their goals for the spring. They are feeling more confident about starting off their season on March 11, against Woodstock North.
