Loud cheering, contagious smiles and energy are the basis of Antioch Community High School superfans, the Cardinal Crazies. This club involves the leaders of the student section and helps keep the students excited throughout the game, but they also have a deeper importance.
ACHS art teacher Stefan Pfautz is the advisor who leads the group through meetings and guides the students whenever help is needed. For the past four years, Pfautz has gone above and beyond for this group by providing multiple resources for the students to maintain an electric atmosphere, such as Cardinal Crazy T-shirts and candy for the whole student section.
“Supporting each other and cheering on our athletes connects all of us to the magic that competitive sports bring. We experience collective disappointment when we lose and joy when we win. It connects us to something larger than ourselves,” Pfautz said.
Essentially, the whole student section is part of the Cardinal Crazies. However, the Cardinal Crazy leaders keep the student section organized and emphasize exemplary sportsmanship, as well as guide the rest of the students on what to do at games.
“I want to expand the participation of the crowd, we are trying to get everyone involved in the game,” senior leader Maddie Barrett said. “For example getting the freshmen and sophomores participating in the chants is currently our number one priority.”
Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment is the main goal of the crazies. Having a fired-up student section not only makes the teams play more in the game but, it makes all sporting events fun for everyone. Giving everyone a chance to create memories is what keeps the group going.
This group meets twice a month to discuss upcoming themes for games and new creative ideas to implement. To become a part of the crazies, a student should get involved and participate. Keep up with the crazies at the next game and make sure to show your school spirit.
