Personally, I had no idea what Paramour by Cirque du Soleil was when walking into the theater. It’s pretty freaky–sitting in a chair when suddenly there’s muscular men flying in the air.
For anyone without any background knowledge, it’s easy to get confused about the crazy stunts and flips the performers on stage are doing.
First of all, Cirque du Soleil is an entertainment company from Canada that specializes in performances with circus styles from around the world. Watching acrobats “fly” around the room is mesmerizing, and the pure strength and flexibility of these performers is insane. They even make it look easy; the acrobats perform with such grace that each move feels like it’s going in slow motion for them.
Now, Paramour. Based in the golden age of Hollywood, the audience follows a director, actress and songwriter in their love triangle. AJ (Jeremy Kushnier) finds his “dream” girl in a speakeasy after having his movies fail in the box office. Singer Indigo (Ruby Lewis) hypnotizes AJ with her beauty and talent, and AJ then offers her and Joey (Ryan Vona), her songwriter, the chance to appear in the movies.
AJ ends up stealing Indigo from her beloved friend and she stars in many of his movies. When it comes to Joey, although his music was used, he’s ignored. Of course, AJ only offered the deal to make him busy with other things. The musical does end on a happy note, with Indigo and Joey back in each other’s lives and AJ gone for good.
