Recently, Flint has been dealing with a water crisis due to lead contamination. The lead has created a serious health issue among the people living there. Some of the heath affects for children from lead poisoning are impaired cognition, behavioral disorders, hearing problems and puberty delays. Lead consumption can affect the heart, the kidneys, and the nerves, as well as stump fetal growth in pregnant women.
Celebrities Cher, Pearl Jam, Big Sean and Meek Mill have all decided to help the people of Flint by donating water bottles, funds to help get new filters, and medical fees.
Meek Mill has donated to the Flint Child and Family Health Development Fund, sending 600,000 water bottles to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. Pearl Jam has donated $300,000 to the United Way of Genesee County’s Flint Water Fund. They are encouraging fans to donate on CrowdWise, and have raised $5,000 so far. Rapper Big Sean has made a personal donation of $10,000 through his charity, The Sean Anderson Foundation, and has also started a CrowdWise for the children. His CrowdWise fund has raised $16,000 so far. Cher has teamed up with Ice Mountain Water, and has donated 181,440 bottles of water to the food bank.
All donations will go to purchasing water filters, water bottles, and emergency support services, along with prevention efforts to keep the lead from entering the water supply. Donations have secured 11,000 filter systems and replaced 5,000 filters. Any leftover donations will go to Flint Child Health and Development Fund.
