Call a Random Swede Somewhere in Sweden

A Swedish tourism agency created a phone line to connect international callers to random Swedish volunteers.

“250 years ago, in 1766, Sweden became the first country in the world to introduce a constitutional law to abolish censorship. To honor this anniversary, Sweden is now the first country in the world to introduce its own phone number. Call today and get connected to a random Swede, anywhere in Sweden and talk about anything you want.” — theswedishnumber.com

The number is +46771793336, and the local number for the United States is+13012760600.

I called the local number, and an automated voice responded, “Calling Sweden. You will soon be connected to a random Swede, somewhere in Sweden.”

After a few rings, I got connected with a 59-year-old Swedish disc jockey named Victor. He lives in Stockholm and explained to me how he recently signed up as a volunteer for this call service. It’s currently very popular, and he gets several calls an evening, most of them late in the day due to the time difference between the U.S and Sweden — it was a little bit after 9 p.m. when I called.

When asked if he had a question for America, he responded, “Yes, I had one that I asked when I was on air when a television company called me. What is with Donald Trump?”

We discussed music and social media, and I realized I really didn’t know much about Sweden, but Victor did his best to inform me about the music scene (we learned that Spotify, a program I use daily, is actually a Swedish invention) and other tidbits of information about his country and his life.

The program is quickly growing in popularity, so try it out while the lines are still open.
