Antioch Community High School’s boys varsity soccer team took a 3-1 win against Grayslake North on Wednesday, September 16, making for Coach Marni Polakow’s 100th coaching career win.
Despite being down 0-1 at halftime, the Sequoits came back strong with a second half shut-out and 3 goals to take the win against the Knights.
“I think we played great tonight,” said head coach Polakow. “We never failed to put away an opportunity, and in the second half we possessed the ball more and moved the ball up the field by keeping it, which really helped us secure the win.”
Senior Lucas Semitka, who scored the second Sequoit goal off of a free kick early in the second half, made a large contribution to the big win.
“After the first goal we had motivation to win and really gave it our all from then on,” said Semitka. “For my goal, it felt great to put us ahead and secure the lead in our minds.”
But this game was not just any other win for the team– it marks Coach Polakow’s 100th coaching career win in her 8 years of coaching the boys soccer team at Antioch.
“This is pretty emotional for me, it wasn’t up until this year when we really looked at the numbers and saw we were at 95 [wins] and I thought ‘Dang, this is actually possible’,” said Polakow. “These boys are putting their hearts out there and learning, listening, and being coachable every day, so this is a great group of boys to share this with.”
Semitka has played for Polakow for all four years of his high school career and sharing this 100th win with his coach is a memory that will last a lifetime.
“It’s a great feeling to be apart of Coach P’s 100th win,” said Semitka. “Being here for four years and getting a lot of the wins with her is something I’m very proud of.”
With 100 wins and many more to come, Polakow continues to lead her boys into what hopes to be another successful season.
