The Antioch boy’s varsity golf team competed against Lake Forest Academy on Wednesday, September 12. This was one of the bigger meets of the year for the golf team, as a win would clinch the conference title for the team. Antioch came out on top with a narrow 168-172 victory. This wouldn’t have been possible without the plays of senior Tony Sertic who shot a 39, which tied with one of Lake Forest’s golfers for the best individual score in the match. But, golf is a team sport and some of the other players stepped up big time for Antioch.
“What has impressed me are the juniors,” varsity head coach Andrew Benton said. “The juniors have stepped up, we always have a couple of juniors step up when they give us their scores.”
These juniors have been key to the golf teams success this year and have really stepped up big in helping the team take home the conference title. Coach Benton made sure to give credit to all the people who have put in the time and effort to improve their game.
“Gavin Eldridge and Niall Schoenfelder have stepped up,” Benton said. “They’ve stepped up when we need them and they’re both playing varsity today so hopefully they can step up big again for us again.”
Junior Gavin Eldridge shot a 48 while junior Niall Schoenfelder shot a respectable 55 for this round.
All these score contributions and hard work helped the team clinch the conference title and will hopefully bring more victory for the boy’s golf team during the rest of this season.
