Barack Obama due to visit Hiroshima
President reaches out to Japan as opportunity to advocate peace, nuclear security.
The damage from the atomic bomb abroad the ‘Enola Gay’ was done over seventy years ago, and its impact still leaves a mark on those affected to this day. Toward the end of World War Two, America dropped a bomb over the city, resulting in the death of 140,000 people.
After years have gone by, Barack Obama will be the first sitting U.S president to ever visit Hiroshima. At the end of this month, he will visit the city alongside Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told USA Today that Obama plants to “…highlight his continued commitment to pursuing the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons.”
Despite the visit, the White House doesn’t want Obama’s visit to be seen as an apology, but a memorial and peace-making opportunity between Japan and America.
Having actually visited the memorial last year, junior Jordan Hart was one of the students that was given the opportunity to go.
“At the actual time of the bomb explosion, everything stops in town for a minute,” Hart said. “That was a really cool experience.”
