Antioch Takes Third Straight Regional Title
The Sequoits took on Chicago Northtown Friday night, pulling out a 59-52 win for the regional title.
On Friday March 2, the Antioch boys basketball team took on Chicago Northtown in a battle for the regional title. After winning the regional title two years in a row, the boys were looking to make this year the third.
The Sequoits came out fast in the first half with seniors Branden Gallimore and Andrew Hare displaying strong defense against the very physical Pumas. Though the game was back-and-forth throughout the entire half, the Sequoits still managed to carry the lead with them into the second half.
In the second half, the Sequoits started off strong but found the Pumas closing the gap in the score. A few turnovers from the Sequoits heightened the intensity of the game as the third quarter came to a close.
As the fourth quarter continued, the game started to drag on as the Pumas began to foul the Sequoits in an attempt to gain the ball back and close the gap in the lead. This effort, however, proved to be in vain as the Sequoits managed to keep their lead, ending the game with a score of 59-52. The game ended with juniors Dan Filippone and Jack Gillespie leading in scoring for the Sequoits with Gallimore also putting up nine points and 12 rebounds.
“Everybody stepped up and played a good game against a good team,” Filippone said. “Overall, the game went really well.”
With this win, the boys secured their third straight regional title, allowing them to move on to sectionals. The Sequoits play DePaul tonight at 7PM at North Chicago for the first round of sectionals. Come out and support them as they hope to advance!
