The Antioch Community High School football team defeats the Grayslake North Knights 43-27 on Oct. 31 to advance to the second round of the playoffs. The Sequoits started off the game spectacularly with a 72 yard touchdown on the first play of the game by senior running back Martin Cohen. With this play Cohen became the all-time rushing yards leader at ACHS. Not only did the offense help with the hot start but so did the defense. On the third defensive play junior cornerback Brady Rietschel caught the pass that slipped through the receivers hands and returned it for a touchdown to make the score 14-0 after only 4 plays. Cohen had another 72 yard touchdown at the end of the first quarter to make the score 21-0. Although, the Knights would not go away that easily. They scored two touchdowns in the quarter, and after another Cohen touchdown, the score was 28-14 heading into halftime. In the third quarter, the Sequoits struck again with a 35 yard touchdown pass from Cohen to senior wide receiver Mason Bussone. In the fourth quarter, the Knights scored two touchdowns to make it a one possession game. However, the Sequoit offense was able to put the game away with a 48 yard touchdown run by Cohen. This score by Cohen gave the game’s final score of 43-27.
Cohen finished the game 279 rushing yards, 35 passing yards, four rushing touchdowns and one passing touchdown. He also played very well on defense as he led the team in solo tackles with six. Senior defensive back Marshall Gehrke led the team in total tackles with five solo tackles and five assists.
The Sequoits won the turnover battle by only giving up the ball once and taking it away on an interception and a fumble forced by junior linebacker Nathan Glauser. The special team also played very well. Senior kicker Brooks Welsch went five for five on PAT attempts and the team was also one for one on two-point conversion.
With the win the Sequoits improve to 8-2 on the season. Next week, the Sequoits take on the undefeated Cary Grove Trojans at Cary Grove in the second round of the playoffs.
