This morning the 92nd Academy Awards nominees were announced. Many of the most beloved movies from the past year are nominated in multiple categories, leaving movie-goers full of anticipation of which will be named the “Best” in each category.
Joker, one of the most talked about films of 2019, is nominated in 11 different categories. The lead actor of the film, Joaquin Phoenix, was nominated for “Performance by an actor in a leading role” for his performance as Arthur Fleck, also known as Joker. The film was also nominated in categories such as “Achievement in music written for motion pictures” for the movie’s original score written by Hildur Guðnadóttir, and “Best motion picture of the year.”
Other films nominated for “Best motion picture of the year” include Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood, which received mixed reviews, as well as Ford v Ferrari, which was received well by critics.
“I thought [Ford v Ferrari] was a really good movie,” junior Lilya Ocampo said. “The race car driver was casted perfectly. I couldn’t see anyone else playing that character, and all the music and sound in the movie was amazing as well.”
2019 was a great year for film, including setting a new record for the world’s top grossing film of all time with the release of Avengers: Endgame, which is nominated for the award for “Achievement in visual effects.”
“Endgame definitely deserved a nomination,” senior Katelyn Goldstein said. “I liked how action packed it was and how it incorporated all the superheroes in that realm of movies.”
The Academy is also recognizing the outstanding animated films from the previous year, nominating films such as How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Toy Story 4.
“Disney always makes good movies,” junior Emma Allen said. “I’m not surprised it got a nomination. It definitely deserved it, although I wasn’t a huge fan of the ending.”
Other movies nominated for multiple awards this year include Little Women (critically praised as a fun and thoughtful adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel), 1917 (the Golden Globe winner for best picture) and the Irishman (Netflix’s three-hour epic). The list of nominees this year are diverse in all categories, and audiences are creating all kinds of buzz surrounding who they believe will win this year.
