Sequoit football moves past Eagles, backed by strong defense, offense

The Antioch Community High School Sequoits varsity football team dismantled the visiting Lakes Community High School Eagles 41-6 on Sept. 20 for their homecoming game. The offense was working throughout the night, scoring touchdown after touchdown for a total of six touchdowns. The Sequoit’s run game could not be stopped, with the team totaling 324 rushing yards. The team also had 96 passing yards for 420 yards. The team’s high-powered offense was backed by a dominant performance from senior running back Martin Cohen. Cohen led the team with five touchdowns, adding up to 215 rushing yards on the night. Not only was Cohen effective in the run game, but he also led the team in total passing yards with 61. Senior wide receiver Masson Bussone led the team in receiving with one reception for 61 yards. Junior quarterback Colin Arquilla also had a quality game with 31 passing yards and a rushing touchdown. The offense did a good job on third down by converting six out of nine attempts. The offensive line was dominant throughout the game, and they did not let up a single sack.

The defense also showed up on Friday, only allowing six points to be scored throughout the entire game. Junior safety Jack Bucar led the team with six solo tackles and one assisted tackle. The Sequoit defense was able to get into the backfield all night, resulting in one sack by senior middle linebacker Nathan Gorski and four tackles for loss by the team.  Special teams played exceptionally with senior kicker Brooks Welch going perfect on PAT attempts.

The atmosphere of the game was electric. Both student sections were packed full and energetic cheering for their teams. ACHS student section, the Cardinal Crazies, was wild after big plays with it being the homecoming game and the crosstown rivalry. The town showed out on the beautiful fall night with over 1,000 people in attendance for the game.

With this dominant win, the Sequoits jump to 3-1 on the season, making them 2-0 in the conference. This puts them atop the conference standings, tied with Wauconda High School and Grayslake Central High School. Next week, the Sequoits look to improve to a 4-1 record as they face the North Chicago Warhawks at North Chicago High School.
