Every year from November to February the Dairy Queen on Main Street in Antioch closes its doors. For ice cream lovers, this is a long three months to be away from their favorite frozen treat. But don’t worry, there are other ways to get an ice cream fix.
1. Something Sweet, located a block away from Dairy Queen in downtown Antioch, is a great place to get ice cream in a traditional candy shop setting. They have a wide range of flavors, including the fall favorite pumpkin. All of their ice cream comes from Homer’s, an ice cream shop located in Wilmette, Ill.
2. Baskin-Robbins, located on Rollins Road in Round Lake Beach, Ill. is another place to get delicious ice cream in an array of flavors. With over sixty kinds of ice cream, there is a flavor for everyone. Each month they feature a new flavor; this month, that flavor is Gingerbread Junction. For those concerned with allergies, a full ingredients list can be found on the Baskin-Robbins website for each flavor.
3. Culver’s, located on Rt. 173 in Antioch, Ill. has a large selection of frozen treats as well. From concrete mixers to sundaes, they have almost everything. For Dairy Queen blizzard fans, the concrete mixer is perfect. A mix of ice cream and toppings it is a good substitute for the blizzard while Dairy Queen is closed. For those who prefer their toppings not mixed in, Culver’s has an enormous selection of sundae toppings. A unique feature of Culver’s is their Flavor of the Day. Each day, a new ice cream flavor or sundae is featured. Some flavors are only available on the days they are featured so make sure you grab them before they are gone.
4. Cold Stone Creamery, located near Great America, in Gurnee, Ill. is the place to go for scoops of ice cream of a gargantuan size. The smallest size, “Like It,” contains a single of scoop of ice cream and weighs about five ounces. The largest size,”Gotta Have It,” has three scoops and weighs about 12 ounces before any toppings are added. Cold Stone also has unique flavors such as cheesecake, cinnamon bun and sweet cream.
5. Suzy’s Swirl, although technically not ice cream, is still a popular place to satisfy a frozen treat craving. Located on Grand Ave. in Gurnee, Ill., this adorable hang out is a great place to get frozen yogurt in a variety of flavors. Although the flavors themselves aren’t overly unique, the atmosphere is what people like about Suzy’s Swirl. Instead of directing someone on how to make your sundae, you make it yourself. This unconventional serving method is what keeps people coming back.
Just because Dairy Queen is closed for three months, it doesn’t mean that ice cream cravings can’t be satisfied.
