On Nov. 4, the Antioch Community High School girl’s 2024 basketball season began. Tryouts were from Nov. 4th to Nov. 6th, which were very intense. Coaches and returning players already have expectations established and the drive has commenced. Coaches and players are excited for this upcoming season and have high hopes for their teams.
JV girls’ head coach Tammy Johnson has sprung into her new coaching position after being the JV2 girl’s coach last season. She is excited for the opportunity to move up in the coaching staff and be able to continue developing skills with her team this year. Johnson realizes this level is more acute, but is ready to take on the role. She hopes her team will work hard this season to prepare for the varsity level.
“JV basketball is not about the glory, it’s not about the record,” Johnson said. “It is all about the skills and making sure they are prepared to take on a varsity role.”
She knows that her team has the drive to want to get better and the work ethic to do so. Johnson expects her girls to have fun and learn along the way. The main goal for the team is to beat the rival team, Lakes Community High School, and for a few of the girls to be called up to the varsity team.
Freshman Addison Lewis, is a player on the JV2 girls team and hopes to further improve her skills by playing high school basketball. She hopes for her team to have a winning season and continue to grow together. The goals she has set are not just for her own improvement, but for the team as a whole as well.
“My personal goals are to become a better ball-handler, be more aggressive and step up into a leadership role,” Lewis said.
Lewis wants to create a positive and respectful environment for her teammates. She encourages her teammates to always want to get better and be able to work with one another for team success.
Senior varsity basketball player Enza Nawrocki, is anticipating a successful upcoming season. She was happy to see such a large number of girls at tryouts this year and predicts a good season with her new teammates. Nawrocki hopes to win conference this year and finally beat Grayslake Central High School. She hopes her team will focus on winning and being competitive. Team chemistry will play a big role in having a successful season. Similarly, strong personal goals will also lead to the team’s success.
“Personally, I want to be a good leader and I want to have fun for my last year,” Nawrocki said.
Similarly, the program as a whole hopes to accomplish a lot this season and bring home notable victories against strong NLCC teams. Working together and communication will be a considerable factor in the program’s success and finding the grit for everyone to do their best will be a major contribution for this upcoming 2024 season.
