1. FOOTBALL EXTENDS WINNING STREAK
The Sequoits improved to 3-0 on the season with a 33-29 victory over Wauconda on Friday night. The Sequoits survived a late comeback from the Bulldogs after opening the game with a 26-7 lead at the half. The homecoming game is next Friday at home against Grant.
2. APPLE ANNOUNCES NEW IPHONES
The most notable feature of the iPhone 7 and 7S is the one they’re missing: a headphone jack. The announcement also featured new Apple Watches, new wireless earbuds and a “Super Mario” games for phones.
3. NFL RETURNS WITH FULL WEEKEND OF GAMES
The National Football League’s 2016-2017 season opened with a thriller on Thursday night as the Denver Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers in a rematch of last year’s Super Bowl. The Chicago Bears fell to a late push by the Houston Texans 23-14 on Sunday while the Green Bay Packers held on against the Jacksonville Jaguars, winning 27-23.
4. NORTH KOREA CONDUCTS LARGEST NUCLEAR TEST YET
North Korea’s increasing nuclear capabilities leave the United States and other world leaders in a difficult situation. Dictator Kim Jong-un has resisted the attempts of the global community to halt their nuclear weapons program, and many in Asia are worried that the situation could easily escalate to a war.
5. PHILIPPINE PRESIDENT UNDER FIRE
Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte’s administration has authorized over 2,000 extrajudicial killings under his crackdown on drugs since taking office at the end of June. Duterte directed expletive remarks at President Barack Obama last week, which has made many question his leadership capabilities.
6. HOMECOMING ASSEMBLY KICKS WEEK OFF
The assembly included a tug of war competition, the presentation of a check from Buffalo Wild Wings to Sequoit Pride and performances by dance, cheer, and the marching band. The event was concluded by the announcement of the homecoming court; seniors Booker Grass and Jackalyn Geraty won king and queen.
7. CLINTON HAS HEALTH ISSUES AT MEMORIAL
Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton left a 9/11 memorial early Sunday morning and was later diagnosed with pneumonia. Clinton lost her balance and was dehydrated when the Secret Service escorted her from the event. Republican Donald Trump has taken every jab he could at Clinton all week, and for good reason: statistics website FiveThirtyEight gives him just a 29.3% chance to win the election as of Sunday.
8. HOMECOMING WEEK OPENS WITH POWDERPUFF GAMES
The annual powderpuff games were held on a Sunday this year, with the freshmen defeating the sophomores 6-0 and the seniors winning 18-0. The seniors win left them with a 4-0 record through their four years, and was headlined by a three interception, two touchdown performance from Amy Reiser.
9. TENTATIVE CEASEFIRE IN SYRIA
Secretary of State John Kerry announced a deal with Russia last week to launch a ceasefire in the war-torn country. While it represents more progress than the region has seen lately, some rebel groups have already refused to follow the deal.
10. THOUSANDS GATHER FOR ANNUAL HAJJ PILGRIMAGE
The pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia is one of the requirements of Islam. Over a million people made the pilgrimage this year, where all met at Mount Arafat on Sunday. The event is marred with tension; last year, thousands were killed in a stampede during the week.
