1. DANCERS MAKE STATE

The Antioch varsity dance team competed at Rolling Meadows High School this weekend, taking fourth out of 17 teams. They will be advancing to state next weekend in Bloomington. Other 2A qualifiers include Libertyville High School, Vernon Hills High School, Deerfield High School, Lakes Community High School and Grayslake NorthHigh School.

2. BLIZZARD TEARS THROUGH EAST

The record-setting blizzard Jonas is projected to dump as much as two feet of snow on some parts of the east coast. New York City and Washington, D.C., were at a standstill for days, and at least 19 people were killed in the storm.

3. AMERICAN STUDENT DETAINED IN NORTH KOREA

The University of Virginia student was accused of perpetrating a “hostile” act, according to North Korean state news. He was in the country with a Chinese tourism company when the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea accused him of being under the “manipulation” of the United States government.

4. GIRLS BASKETBALL BEATS BULLDOGS

The team continued their hunt for playoffs with a 55-43 win over Wauconda on Wednesday. Junior Ashley Reiser capped the win off by scoring her 1000th career point in the fourth quarter. The girls have four regular season games remaining, including a game at Lakes on Jan. 29 and two home games in early February.

5. SIGNS POINT TOWARDS NINTH PLANET

Researchers at the California Institute of Technology announced finding another planet in our solar system on Wednesday. While the planet has not been seen, the movement of other celestial objects suggest it is the size of Neptune and 20 times farther away from the Sun than the current farthest planet.

6. FORWARD PROGRESS FOR FLINT

The Michigan city has had problems with high lead levels in water for years. The state finally agreed to give money to Flint on Tuesday to begin solving their water issue after President Barack Obama declared a state of emergency on Jan. 16. Officials still worry  the money given is just three percent of the funds necessary to fix the problem.

7. FUTURE FRESHMAN VISIT ANTIOCH

Students from feeder schools came to “Eighth Grade Night” on Thursday. The evening was full of seminars for new students, as well as sports and clubs trying to find new members for future years.

8. MANNING VS BRADY: ONE LAST TIME?

The 17th meeting between quarterback legends Tom Brady and Peyton Manning took place on Sunday afternoon in the AFC Championship game. Manning’s age has been taking a toll on him for years, making many experts believe this is his last season before retirement. Manning’s experience proved to be too much for Brady’s Patriots; the Broncos won 20-18.

9. FOUR KILLED IN CANADA SHOOTING

A 17-year-old suspect was arrested Friday after attacking a high school and a home in the small town of La Loche, Saskatchewan. Two teachers and two brothers were killed, and seven others were injured.

10. LARGE EARTHQUAKE HITS OFF COAST OF ALASKA

The magnitude-6.8 earthquake was followed by two aftershocks, all of which could be felt 160 miles away in Anchorage. Nobody was hurt, although reports of a gas leak and minor damage have surfaced.
