1. SPACEX LANDS ROCKET ON BARGE
The spaceflight company successfully resupplied the International Space Station last Friday. The rocket then was guided back to Earth, where it landed on a barge in the Atlantic Ocean. The company had not launched a resupply mission since their last rocket exploded in June.
2. WORLD LEADERS HAVE TOUGH WEEK
Iceland’s prime minister resigned last Tuesday following protests around his involvement in the Panama Papers scandal. Ukraine’s prime minister announced he would resign after barely surviving a no-confidence vote on Friday. The United Kingdom’s David Cameron has spent all week dodging criticism and battling protests after it was revealed that he also was involved in the Panama Papers leak.
3. “MAN IN HAT” CAPTURED AFTER MANHUNT
The final suspect in the Brussels bombings was captured Saturday. The man, who confessed after hours of questioning, was also involved in the Paris attacks last year. He was the last major suspect of both the Paris and Brussels terror cells that carried out two massive attacks in the last six months.
4. CRUZ, SANDERS BEGIN COMEBACKS
Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders won his seventh recent state, taking Wyoming by 11 percent. It was the last primary before the New York primary. Republican hopeful Ted Cruz won in Wisconsin but fell short in Michigan last week. The Republican field is now composed of front-runner Donald Trump, Cruz and John Kasich. Cruz is now 200 delegates behind Trump.
5. CHOIR FESTIVAL BRINGS YOUNG SINGERS TOGETHER
Antioch choir members joined the ranks of more than 700 vocalists from the surrounding schools to perform in the Choir Festival. The largest local student performance of the year brings aspiring musicians from elementary, middle and high schools around the Antioch area together to perform for parents.
6. SPRINGSTEEN LATEST TO CONDEMN NORTH CAROLINA
Musician Bruce Springsteen cancelled his show in North Carolina last week. The move comes in response to the state’s new law, which denies transgender individuals the right to choose which bathroom to use based on which gender they identify as. The state has come under heavy criticism in the weeks following the law’s passing.
7. SPEITH COLLAPSES IN MASTERS UPSET
Jordan Speith‘s three-day lead crumbled on hole 12 of the final day of The Masters. Speith’s quadruple-bogey opened the door for England’s Danny Willett to steal the famous green jacket. In addition, an astounding three golfers made a hole-in-one on hole 16, including one which bounced off another ball.
8. FIREWORKS EXPLODE AT INDIAN TEMPLE
More than 100 people were killed in an Indian town Saturday night when fireworks for an upcoming festival exploded on the ground. More than 200 were injured. According to CNN, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the incident was “heart-rending and shocking beyond words.”
9. EARTHQUAKE RIPS THROUGH SOUTHERN ASIA
Afghanistan, India and Pakistan were all shaken on Sunday by a magnitude-7.1 earthquake. The quake was centered near the Afghan border, and tremors were felt as far away as New Dehli, India. No reports of casualties or injuries were immediately available.
10. UNITED NATIONS PREPARES TO ELECT NEW LEADER
Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s term expires at the end of this year. The United Nations has decided to allow all 193 members to participate in electing its next leader. A woman or Eastern European may be elected for the first time at the end of the year.
